Most major steelmakers have set climate targets by now. The harder question is whether they have credible, financed plans to meet them. And that’s increasingly where producers, investors and regulators are turning their attention.
Two new frameworks are helping to answer that question. One assesses where companies actually stand. The other shows what doing the work properly looks like. Together, they offer a clear picture of where the steel sector stands on decarbonisation and what a credible pathway forward requires.
This #GreenSteel60 session brings together experts from SteelWatch and the Institure for Energy, Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA South Asia) to introduce both tools and explore what they reveal about the state of corporate transition planning and what financial markets now expect to see behind a net-zero commitment.

- Meenakshi Viswanathan, Energy Finance Analyst, IEEFA South Asia
Meenakshi works on energy finance across South Asia’s heavy industry sectors, with a focus on helping Indian corporates understand and navigate the financial expectations now attached to climate commitments. In this session, she introduces IEEFA South Asia’s interactive Climate Transition Planning Tool ,designed for Indian corporates and built on India-specific data for the steel and power sectors, walking through what a credible transition plan involves, from strategic ambition and decarbonisation levers through to financial integration. - Christopher Wright, Consultant, SteelWatch
Christopher supports SteelWatch’s research and analysis on steelmaker transition readiness. He joins Caroline to discuss the Scorecard’s methodology and what it tells us about the readiness of major producers to transition to near-zero-emissions production.
- Alasdair Docherty, Sustainable Finance and Data Analyst, IEEFA
Alasdair focuses on the intersection of sustainable finance and industrial decarbonisation, helping investors and companies understand what credible climate transition planning requires. He joins Meenakshi to present the Climate Transition Planning Tool and discuss how financial markets are raising the bar on what they expect to see behind a net-zero commitment. - Caroline Ashley, Executive Director, SteelWatch
Caroline leads SteelWatch, an organisation dedicated to holding the global steel industry accountable for its transition commitments. In this session, she presents the SteelWatch Corporate Scorecard, the first comprehensive global assessment of 18 major steelmakers, including Tata Steel and JSW, across 11 countries, and explores what the findings reveal about who is genuinely on track and who is not.
