As India continues to build at scale, the steel going into that infrastructure will shape the country’s emissions profile for decades. Reducing emissions intensity while maintaining industrial competitiveness is becoming increasingly urgent and procurement, both public and private, is emerging as one of the most powerful levers available to drive that shift.
Green steel supply is already emerging in India. What the market is waiting for is demand. But what signals are needed to unlock it and are buyers and producers ready to act?
This #GreenSteel60 session brings together experts from Climate Catalyst, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) to explore exactly that. Drawing on new research and policy analysis, speakers examine what producer and procurer readiness looks like today, challenge the prevailing myths around cost and supply, and set out the procurement signals, across both public and private sectors, needed to get the market moving.

- Govind Vasishta, Senior Counsellor, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII): Govind works at CII on industrial policy and sustainability, supporting India’s leading industry body in shaping the country’s approach to green steel. He joins Nandan to present the joint CII and Climate Catalyst report, bringing the industry perspective on what it will take to make green steel procurement work at scale. Read the full report here.
- Karthik Shetty, Consultant, Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW): Karthik works on industrial decarbonisation at CEEW, one of India’s leading energy and environment research institutions. In this session, he presents new analysis on how India can kickstart green procurement without always paying a premium, addressing the myths around cost and supply and exploring the practical steps, including the role of state governments, that can unlock demand across both public and private buyers.
