Global steel production is responsible for almost 10 per cent of climate pollution

Demand for steel is expected to grow 30 per cent by 2050

To stay within safe climate limits, the steel industry must cut emissions by at least 50 per cent by 2050

Asia produces 70 per cent of the world’s steel

  • Currently, the most common method of steel production produces twice the volume of carbon emissions than steel itself due to the huge amounts of coal used during production.
  • Global demand for steel is not going anywhere. In fact, it is growing. This is being driven by Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Nearly all (90 per cent) of steel is manufactured in just ten countries.
  • The technology to produce steel without coal exists, but it’s not yet commercially viable at scale. Green hydrogen-based production and other breakthrough technologies require massive infrastructure investment and supportive policies to compete with traditional methods.
